December rounded off an amazing first full year for BetConnect, with multiple five-figure bets being matched in a wide range of sports, including darts, football and the NFL. This was unthinkable just a few short months ago and really shows how far we’ve come this year.
0% Commission on the ‘Pub Sports’
The festive period is the time when fans of darts and snooker come alive, with the UK Championship whetting the appetite at the start of December, and the PDC World Championship bringing in Christmas and the New Year at Ally Pally. Our Pros get a whopping two months commission-free on the so called ‘pub sports’ in December and January, and they have certainly taken advantage so far!
Peter Wright won his first PDC World Championship at the ripe old age of 49, but undoubtedly the story of the tournament was Fallon Sherrock. First, she beat Ted Evetts to become the first female to win a match on the Ally Pally stage, and then incredibly went on to defeat the 11th seed, Mensur Suljovic in the next round. This clearly came as almost as much of a shock to our Pros as it did to the players she beat. Stamford backed Suljovic at 1/14, but the biggest misjudgement was made by Alfonso, who fancied Suljovic (-2.5) at 8/11. In effect he was backing a 3-0 win for the Austrian!
It wasn’t all bad news for our darts Pros though, with Satsuma having huge wins on Gary Anderson at 4/11 v Ryan Searle, Wright to beat Jeffrey de Zwaan at 4/5, and Nico Kurz to get the better of James Wilson at 2/1 for a five-figure profit. Fattytrellis also got in on the action, backing Danny Baggish at 7/4 against Andy Boulton, who had shortened to 5/4 by the time of the match and won.
Ding defies the doubters
Ding Junhui won his third UK Championship with a 10-6 win over Stephen Maguire in the final of a tournament littered with surprises. He not only defied his poor form going into the tournament, but also the hoard of BetConnect Pros constantly betting against him: fisherman backed Ali Carter at 11/8 against him in the second round, OPachenko69 fancied a large punt on Ronnie O’Sullivan at 2/9 in the next, and the appropriately named snookerpro put their money behind Liang Wenbo at 9/4 in the quarter-final, all to be vanquished by the Chinese Dragon. This was good news for any of our layers who fancied him!
Slowfoot quick out of the blocks
While a lot of horse racing punters were gearing up for the Boxing Day races and the King George VI Chase at Kempton, it was a Class 5 handicap hurdle at Uttoxeter on the 20th that caught our eye here at BetConnect. A Pro known as Slowfoot wanted a bet on the Suzi Best-trained Thats My Rabbit, and snapped up odds of 8/1 at 9:20am. Within eight minutes more than £1,500 was matched, once again showing the strength of our #EarlyMarkets. Come the off, Thats My Rabbit, who had won once in 10 previous attempts at hurdling, had been smashed into 7/2 and couldn’t be caught as he won by a comfortable five lengths, giving Slowfoot a lovely early Christmas present.
