February: Yet another strong month on the BetConnect platform with just under £3m matched. More than 50% of that was on the football, so that’s where we’ll start.
Football: Three key highlights
Bottom of the table Luton Town at home to high flying Brentford… surely not? That’s what the layers must have thought when taking on new Football Pro 30331E, who was on Luton at 23/5 (5.60). It was the third time 30331E had been on The Hatters in February, and they finally came good on the 25th, beating Brentford 2-1. Two bets of £5k were fully matched, returning an overall profit of £46k. A £30k bet matched on Wolves to beat Norwich two days earlier was another highlight for 30331E.
When RB Leipzig travelled to Frankfurt in the German Cup. Kelly, who is often on the goal scorers’ markets, backed Andre Silva to score first and anytime at 15/2 (8.50) and 5/2 (3.50) respectively. A 17th minute penalty secured an £18k profit.
It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for the Pros however. On the last day of the month Mowbray backed the unbeaten Liverpool to win away at Watford at 1/2 (1.50) for £15k, and we all know what happened there. A phenomenal performance from Nigel Pearson’s men made the BetConnect layers – as well as the many Arsenal fans proudly remembering their “Invincibles” former heroes – very happy indeed.
Horse Racing: Cheltenham clues in Ireland
There was top class racing to start the month off with the Dublin Racing Festival taking place at Leopardstown. The highlight on day one was the Irish Champion Hurdle, won by Honeysuckle. Gavinb4 and Twizell1 were two of many Pros who backed the unbeaten mare, who is the 2/1 2nd favourite for the Mares hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival next week. The two biggest bets on the first day were from aleem82, who had £1.1k on Cash Back at 5/1, who finished second, and Hawkwell, who had £900 EW on Daybreak Boy (unplaced) at 2/1.
Hawkwell was back for day two, staking £1k EW on the 50/1 shot Take Revenge in the 14:30. The horse shortened to 33/1 before pulling up on the final circuit. The winner of the big race on Sunday, the Irish Gold Cup, was Gigginstown’s Delta Work, who was backed by WoodwardRacing at 11/4. That horse is no bigger than 6/1 for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Mahomes leads Chiefs (and Pros) to glory
The 54th Super Bowl at the start of the month inspired Hawkley, who rarely bets on the American Football, to put up a £5k Bet Request, fully matched, on the Chiefs at 20/23 (1.87). Kansas City won by 11 points to claim their second Super Bowl. Surprisingly it was the quarterback Patrick Mahomes who started the scoring for Kansas, with a one-yard run to land a few 4/1 anytime touchdown score bets for the Pros.
The month ended with a string of chunky darts bets on the Premier League in Dublin, and the Belgian Championship in Hasselt. Satsuma lost £6k on Glen Durrant in his match with Aspinall on Thursday, before losing a further £26k across two bets on Friday. Andy Boulton and Ron Meulenkamp, both odds-on, both lost 6-5 in their respective matches! Extremely unlucky for Satsuma, but a great result for any layers.
